Gearbox Alignment: Softfoot Correction

Soft Foot refers to where a gearbox, motor or other machine is bolted to an uneven surface. When the feet of a machine are tightened down to a surface that isn’t level, the machine will distort and consequently, the shafts will not be correctly aligned.

A soft foot condition needs to be corrected before any alignment takes place. If not, the measurement result will be of no value. It is more or less impossible to establish if there is a soft foot condition without using some kind of measurement tool. The Fixturlaser Alignment System’s built-in Softcheck program checks each foot and displays the result in mm or mils.

The soft Foot Check process is straightforward. The measurements are entered into the system regarding the shaft, laser receiver and foot spacing distances. Each foot is then systematically loosened and retightened. The Fixturlaser system will measure the ‘spring’ in each foot and display the amount of correction required by shimming under each foot to correct the soft foot condition.

On completion of the Soft Check procedure and any required shimming and re-measurement, the user can proceed immediately to conducting the alignment of the gearbox shaft.

The Soft Check function comes as standard on the Fixturlaser XA System, and the Fixturlaser EXIGO and GO gearbox alignment systems are also programmed to check for softfoot condition as standard, using a similar procedure.
